From one grant to every country

One of our first grants came from the European Climate Foundation, which asked us to explore whether producing an open source alternative to the International Energy Agency's (IEA) annual World Energy Outlook (WEO) report was possible.

Instead of producing an annual report, we built Scenario Builder. We wanted to build capacity, not dependency, democratising access to tools that make producing analysis like the WEO fast and free.

Today we are launching global coverage: 163 countries and 53 sub-national grid regions, with free, simulation-ready datasets built entirely from open sources - laying the groundwork for resilient energy decision infrastructure. Whatever power system you work on, there is now a model waiting for you.

Why every country matters

The world needs to build trillions of dollars of clean energy over the next decade. Almost every decision along the way, whether agreeing policy, securing finance, or connecting a project to the grid, depends on some form of electricity system modelling.

The problem is that most modelling software is unaffordable, closed, or hard to use well. This makes stakeholder alignment slower and harder to achieve. It is part of the reason the IEA estimates 2.5 TW of clean energy and battery storage is stuck in grid connection queues worldwide.

Until now, our answer has been a growing set of calibrated country and regional models. Global coverage extends that answer to everyone else: a common starting point that any institution can adapt to its own questions.

What is included

Select any of 163 countries and you start with:

  • Simulation-ready data drawn entirely from open sources
  • An uncalibrated scenario, with 8,760 hourly timesteps, 23 power technologies, and and 53 sub-national grid regions
  • Fully adjustable inputs to test how different choices shape costs, investment, and emissions
  • AMP, our AI, to review inputs, question results, and edit scenarios in plain language

Scenario Builder runs on open source modelling engines (currently OSeMOSYS and PyPSA), and every assumption is documented and open to inspection.

What these models are, and what they are not

The new global models differ from our 17 calibrated South, East, and Southeast Asian models. They are built from consistent, quality-assessed open datasets and designed to get you up and running quickly. All scenarios build and solve successfully, but they have not yet been calibrated.

The global quick start models include:

  • Medium- and low-resolution OSeMOSYS capacity expansion scenarios covering 2023 to 2050
  • PyPSA yearly scenarios covering the base year (2023) plus every fifth year from 2025 to 2050

Launching uncalibrated models is a deliberate trade-off. A transparent, editable model you can open today, inspect, and improve beats a black box or a blank page. It gives you a better starting point than commissioning a consultancy or standing up your own modelling stack, and it gets you to useful insights faster. Where the data can be better, you can see exactly why, and change it.

Calibration closes that gap. Our Solutions Engineering team has a calibration standard that benchmarks model outputs against historical generation, capacity, and demand data, tuning inputs until the model reproduces real system behaviour. Closing the gap: calibrating your Scenario Builder model with AMP

AMP is here to help

Calibration can sound like specialist work. With AMP, our AI, it doesn't have to be. Open any global uncalibrated scenario and AMP will suggest where to begin: calibrate the base year, right-size the capacity mix for your region, or sanity check the costs and fuel prices.

But AMP is more than a reviewer. It checks inputs against what is known about the region, applies the changes you accept, sets up the model runs, and helps you interrogate the results - a full modelling workflow in plain language. Work that once took a consultant weeks now happens in a conversation. And if you have real-world data, such as historical demand or installed capacity, hand it to AMP, and it will fold it into the scenario.

Start with one question

The fastest way to get value is to start small:

  1. Pick your country or grid region on Scenario Builder.
  2. Open the least-cost starting scenario.
  3. Change one assumption: demand growth, a fuel price, or a technology constraint.
  4. Run it, and compare the result against the starting case.

If you spot something in the data that does not match what you know about your system, tell us, or change it yourself. That feedback loop is how these models get better, country by country.
